Skin Resurfacing

Over the years, the effects of aging and sun damage can take a toll on the appearance of skin. Other conditions such as acne and previous injuries or surgery can also affect your skin's quality. The goal of skin resurfacing is to improve the appearance and tone of a patient's skin. The new layer of skin that is regenerated has reduced wrinkles along with improved texture and color. There are several techniques in which skin resurfacing can be performed including dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. Each of these methods removes the outer layer of damaged skin and encourages collagen remodeling in the dermal layer. The results and recovery times depend more on the depth of treatment than which modality is used.

Although some patients may bruise from this procedure, it does not come with significant down time. Ice is provided prior to the procedure to help decrease the risk of bruising. If you are prone to bruising, please consult with us regarding over the counter supplements to help decrease the risk of bruising.

Botox Injections

At Charleston Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of BOTOX Cosmetic products to our patients. Botox cosmetic is an injectable medication used to treat facial wrinkles, which are caused by the action of the underlying muscles of facial expression. Common areas of the face that are treated with Botox include the glabellar region (between the eyebrows, above the nose), forehead, and "crow's feet" lines (around the eyes). A detailed facial assessment can help to determine the ideal treatment options for various facial lines and wrinkles.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal and soft tissue fillers are a great way to restore fullness to the face. These fillers can add more volume and minimize skin lines and wrinkles. The material is injected underneath the skin in the nasolabial fold, marionette lines, and oral commissures, which serves to plump up these areas and smooth out the wrinkles. Lip augmentation is also achieved with dermal fillers.

At Charleston Plastic Surgery, we offer a variety of JuveDerm products to our patients including Voluma, Ultra and Ultra Plus. We also occasionally use Restylane, Restylane Fine Lines, and Lift depending on the individual patient’s needs.

Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing technique used to decrease the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars often caused by acne, trauma, or previous dermatologic surgery. abrading the skin will allow the skin to heal itself correctly, helping minimize scars. It will also promote the production of collagen to the area to help decrease the look of fine lines and wrinkles. This surgery may be done on its own or in conjunction with other facial procedures.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a skin resurfacing technique that may help with uneven skin tone or texture cause by sun damage, age spots, genetics, and hormonal changes. This will help to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. A chemical will be placed on the desired area to penetrate deep into the skin and activate your body’s natural inflammatory response. This will allow the skin to rejuvenate itself and produce more collagen in the area, improving elasticity.

After a chemical peel, you can expect to have skin discoloration for 5-10 days. This procedure is not painful but skin discoloration and/or peeling may keep you out of work until it resolves. Charleston Plastic Surgery will provide make-up services at 10-14 days to help cover up any discolorations.
